ECBS: European College of Bowen Studies
"I have been very impressed with all my dealings with E.C.B.S. – responsive, professional and informative."
Krystyna M, June 05
In 1994 the Bowen Technique was practically unknown in the UK and it was only through the efforts of Julian Baker and Louise Atwill that this Therapy ballooned in popularity and interest. Julian trained in the Bowen Technique with Oswald Rentsch whilst in Australia. When he and his wife, Louise, returned to England in the early 1990’s, they continued working with Oswald Rentsch in setting up training courses throughout the UK and Julian assisted teaching on them too.
After a few years Julian and Louise decided that the training structure needed to be completely re-designed and formalised. This caused Oswald Rentsch to continue on his own path of training for the Bowen Technique and Julian and Louise set about founding and organising the European College of Bowen Studies (ECBS) -www.thebowentechnique.com In order to formalise the professionalism of Bowen Technique, they also set up the Bowen Therapists European Register, Europe’s largest Bowen organisation - www.bter.org.uk

The aim was to set up a system and environment where Therapists could train and become proficient in their skills. Structure was given to the training with distinct levels and goals to be achieved and a Standard attained that would be recognised throughout the World.
The result of this is that ECBS runs Bowen Technique training courses all over the UK, Ireland, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Holland and Belgium. Courses have also been taught in Germany, Dubai and India.
Students undertaking ECBS training will enter a formalised, structured environment where progression is logical and easily understood. Students can continue their studies with any ECBS teacher, at any time and in any venue that suits them. See the Courses page for full details of courses available with Jo.
This Standard also allowed the Bowen Technique to start being recognised as a primary care tool rather than an alternative to mainstream health care. Again, Julian and Louise were instrumental in bringing Bowen to the attention of health professionals and raising its profile within care organisations. Bowen is now widely used in hospitals, surgeries, physiotherapy environments and in professional sports where its value has been fully recognised as a care aid.
As a dynamic and progressive college, ECBS is leading the way in research and development and has recently been teaching the Bowen Technique to neurosurgeons in Berlin. The College has also been invited to speak at a convention in Boston later this year regarding the research in the efficacy of Bowen with fascia and hamstring flexibility.
ECBS Teachers
“I just want ECBS to know how much I rate the school for professionalism, friendliness and the highest level of teaching. Having trained in many other therapies, ECBS was by far the best standard of teaching by a mile”
Hilary C, Nov 06
All ECBS teachers have been in practice for at least two years, have undertaken six months of intensive teacher training in the Bowen Technique and are fully qualified to pass on the ECBS Syllabus. Teachers also participate in regular training and social weekends that allow them to pass on new knowledge, build a solid support network and ensure that they are the best trained teachers of Bowen Technique anywhere in the World.
If you would like to arrange for a course to be run in your area, contact Jo to discuss numbers, venues and dates.
The European College of Bowen Studies retains close ties with Tom Bowen’s family in Australia and has their full support in the development they bring to Tom Bowen’s work.
